Home Renovation Cleanups: Renovating your home can be a very exciting time. While you may be looking forward to the end result, you may be crippled with the prospect of cleaning and decluttering the area afterwards. No worries. If you approach it with a plan and a calm head, you can get the job done quickly and efficiently – especially if you hire professionals to haul away all the junk for you.

Hiring Professionals to Dispose of Construction Debris

There will no doubt be some leftover construction debris and materials after your project. Not all contractors will take it away for you, which means you’re left with a mess that takes us space and becomes a safety issue.

From piles of scrap wood and concrete to broken tools and drywall, your first thought may be to rent a dumpster and just toss it all in. However, dumpster rentals can get very expensive very fast. The price you pay will depend on how long it’s on your property. You can shell out a lot of money to have a dumpster in your yard even for a few days or a week. Plus, it looks unsightly out there on the lawn.

There’s a better way. Hire a junk removal company to come in and haul it all away for you. Just tell them what you need to be taken away and they will haul it out to their trucks for you. You don’t even have to bring it to the curb or risk breaking your back throwing that heavy debris into a tall dumpster.

Cleaning Up Dust Post-Renovation

Now that the big stuff is out of the way, it’s time to get rid of all that construction dust that is covering everything. Dust from wood, drywall, tile, concrete and brick can spew fine particles into the air that settle everywhere throughout your home – even in your ventilation system. Always don a mask and goggles before cleaning this dust, as it can be dangerous to breathe in those particles.

You’ll need to gather these cleaning supplies beforehand:

  • Face mask
  • Towels
  • Used dryer sheets
  • Dust mops
  • Cleaning solution
  • A vacuum and extra filters
  • A broom, dust mop and wet mop
  • Clean the walls: Wipe them down with a damp towel.
  • Dust ceiling and fans: Using the soft bristle brush attachment and hose on your vacuum, remove dust from these two areas.
  • Wipe down trim, baseboards, frames, and doors with a soft towel and dusting spray.
  • Sweep and vacuum: Use a dust mop on hardwoods and tile, then vacuum the carpeted areas.
  • Clean all cabinets inside and out: You won’t believe where all that dust can settle!
  • Scrub down countertops and backsplashes using a soft scrubber.
  • Clean appliances: Wipe down major appliances and switch out the air filter in your HVAC system.
  • Clean toilets and mirrors
  • Sweep porches: Because workers are constantly in and out of your home during the project, they track in dust and debris onto your porches and patios. Sweep these off.
  • Clean exterior lights
  • Wash driveways and walkways: Use a pressure washer to clean these high-traffic areas.

Of course, the best way to keep dust to a minimum during a home improvement project is to cover all surfaces with tarps or plastic sheeting. This isn’t always possible, though, so be very thorough in your cleaning for everyone’s health and safety.
